Determination

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

"We told them so."
"Crazy men and their crazy dreams."
"It`s foolish to chase wild visions."

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence.

And your say?

who would ever thought that this would be the story behind the Brooklyn Bridge..The built of the bridge actually came from a mental and physical handicap person..
If it was me, I would maybe given up as I could not bear any more innocent lifes taken away.
But then I also realized that Roebling and the other engineers involved sacrificed themselves because they have something that other people don't...they have 'believe'..That what's make Washington's spirit to lit up for 13 crucial years, because he knows his father's, his friends, and his own dream will come true..

** miracles do happen to those who believe in them ;) **

1) don't give up
2) just ignore what people says
3) believe in yourself
4) try to make your dream become true
5) make your life meaningful although it was a simple thing
6) always think positive

that's all...

I dont even know that the person who inspired the Brooklyn bridge was a handicap man who got the injuries from the its own idea..
but it was very motivate, if the bridge can be the historical monument, no wonder if my idea can become just like it. but now, i just think that if he can move forward even he faced with so many obstacle, why not me who just faced with very simple problem and obstacle! i know, i can be better!!

Assalamualaikun...

i just know that the Brooklyn bridge was an idea of John Roebling. Eventhough after John Roebling dead, his son, Washington who was also injured not give up to build the bridge. When we had determined to do something, we will try to finish it. Washington wants to fulfill his father dreams that is to build the Brooklyn Bridge eventhough he had became a handicap, he doesn't give up!

Hi there..!

Determination. A powerful word. Just look at John Roebling, he did continued his dream even he is weak physically. So, here I just can conclude that, our aim is everything. Because, Where there's a will there's a way. Right? So, lets think about it..

So this is the story behind the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Love it! Inspiring. Truly inspiring. It tells us that eventhough we have our weaknesses, but we should blame our weaknesses for our failures. Instead, we should focus on our advantages on make use of all that we still have rather than crying about what we have lost. Its normal for people to say that we are crazy for wanting to do something that others have not done before. Take that as a challenge to motivate yourself to achieve what you believe in and dream on doing. Be tough and and always keep a positive attitude. Try to be the best that you can be.

Salam. A motivate story. All the peoples in this world have their own dreams. But, without determination, their dreams only dreams and they never achieve that. It’s really though and hard to achieve our dreams. With has a determination, we will never give up although failure for the first steps. Never think positive about we have faced.
The most important thing is, never forget Allah. Where’s the will, there’s the ways.

hi everyb0dy..
Such a very motivated story to be shared..
From my point of view, things that i can see is, the engineer named Washington,is willing to continue his beloved daddy's dream, to complete the bridge. due to the story, we can learnt that with a strong desired to finish his daddy's only dream, he tried his hard to communicate with his dearest wife to send his message to engineers. From here, we can see that, with a very strong shielded willing, we can fulfill the dream of our's as Washington did. Yet, from the story, we can observed that his wife also is a factor of his success. so, person whose beside us also play main important roles in our path of victories. so, family is the best to be said as the best person to be at the back of our success....

Good day everyone. Thank you Miss for sharing this knowledge with us. Less that I knew this is the story behind The Brooklyn Bridge which is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States that stretches 5,989 feet over the East River, connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn (on Long Island). I am indeed startled that the bridge was built by a handicap who can only move his finger. I am impressed in these three people. Firstly is the father John Roebling whereby he still pursuit his dreams of building the bridge even though he did not get help in the beginning. This is the first level of determination here. Secondly is the son Washington Roebling whereby he still continued the dream of his father although he lost his ability to move and talk. He was able to interpret his ideas just by tapping his finger. Here I saw the second level of determination. Thirdly his wife Emily Warren Roebling was able to convey the message with tremendous patience over thirteen years. Here I saw the third level of determination. I feel that there is nothing that is impossible if we have enough determination and courage within us just like the story. Thank you for reading my comment.
